The checkerboard mesa can be seen on the rocks behind the trees. The crisscross patterns are a result of weathering and erosion of the Navajo sandstone.
We drove through St. George on the way to Vegas and stopped at the St. George temple.
The St. George temple is actually the first and oldest operating temple in modern times, made of sandstone plastered white. It is also one of only nine temples without a statue of the angel Moroni (as is the Cardston Alberta temple).

We walked around the Red Rock Hotel & Casino. It's a really nice place pretty far off the strip on the way to Red Rock Canyon.
The interior of the Red Rock is one of the nicest we've seen.
