Cly did 3 years of traditional film photography. These are just a few.

  • This is a picture in Cardston. It was taken at about 6:30 in the morning. Cly was going to take part in a wedding of one of his best friends later on that day in the temple.

Cly has captured many photos of this temple. The bridge and lights in this exposure draw leading lines toward the structure. As most photographers know, leading lines are encouraged in just about every photography book but Cly has always found them particularly elusive. Cly was taking a slow drive through the town and noticed this pleasing composition in his rear view mirror and had to stop.

Cly was also pleased with the performance of the Kodak Professional Portra 400BW film. At the time Cly took this photo (October 27, 2001), it was only on the market for a couple of months. The blacks are very black and the tonal range is great. Cly almost couldn't believe it's 400 speed film! Cly hasn't been able to detect any grain in the majority of the prints he's obtained with this film.

Cly calls this photo "All Roads Lead There."

  • This is one of those candid shots that turned out better than Cly thought it would. The subject is Sean McAsey the night before his wedding in the Super 8 Motel in Cardston.

This was handheld at a relatively slow shutter speed and was the first frame on a newly loaded roll of film. Cly used the same Kodak Professional Portra 400BW film for the "All Roads Lead There" picture.

  • This is from Cly's very first roll of Kodak HIE infared film. Cly had experimented with Ilford's 200 SFX film ("pseudo-infrared" film) before with boring results. Cly feels fortunate to have this shot becuse many of the shots on the roll were fogged due to heat. Cly had to use his old Canon AE-1 because his newer Canon EOS 300 used an infrared sensor to assist in the film winding; additionally, there is a window in the back of the body to show the film cannister - both detrimental to infrared film!

This was taken outside the Salt Lake City temple which Cly had the opprotunity to visit on a road trip in the spring of 2001 (a year before the Olympics).

  • Cly took the day off work to go to the Calgary Stampede (July 2001). It would have been a dismal day photographically if he hadn't taken this one. He shot 3 rolls of Fuji Reala 200 that day with disappointing results. The rodeo was sloppy-looking because it rained.

Cly was pleasantly surprinsed when he got this one developed. As with many long exposure shots, the results often look very different than what was seen through the viewfinder. This particular scene was jam-packed with people and all of the bottom half of the candy stand was hidden by bodies. In the print, only the folks who stood still for 3 seconds show up. The sky came out with a pleasant blue hue as well; Cly remembers it looking mostly grey at the scene.

  • Cly toook this with Fuji Superia 200 film in December of 2000 (8 second exposure at f/4.5.) from Scotsman's Hill.

  • This is a picture Cly took for a photography class in Fish Creek Park. Cly took two other shots at different focal lengths and decided to wait until he could capture somone actually on the bridge for a third. He was lucky to get a man and a dog.
